Museum collections are not just comprised of physical objects. This photomacrograph of the scales of a Madagascan sunset moth (Chrysiridia rhipheus) is from Wellcome Images, a database of both historical and scientific images from the Wellcome Collections and Library.
This image was taken to demonstrate how the moth’s iridescent wings change color without having much pigmentation of their own. The scales cause an optical illusion as the light bounces off at different angles.
Happy National Moth Week!
